The Concept of Time

According to Wikipedia, time is "indefinite continued progress of existence and events that occur in apparently irreversible succession from the past through the present to the future. In history, a large variety of devices have been invented to measure time. The study of all these devices is called  horology - the art or science of measuring time.

Various instruments are used to measure time include clocks, watches, clockwork, sundials, hourglasses, clepsydras, timers, time recorders, marine chronometers and atomic clocks. I went to a shopping mall one day and I came across this really pretty hourglass decoration (shown in the picture below) and was inspired to write this piece.

The flow of sand in an hourglass can be used to measure the passage of time. It also concretely represents the present as being between the past and the future. I thought to myself, this was how some people at a certain era measured time. How did they come up with the idea and why was it so important?

I have a curious mind and love asking questions. Sometimes I get answers and sometimes I don't. The big question is why did people from ancient times think there was a need to measure time? I believe one of the reasons probably was for accountability purpose. When you can place a figure on something, then it becomes much easier to account for how it is used. It helps to appreciate the value. They say when the use of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable. Therefore the one main reason for measuring time is for you to be able to judiciously allocate it during the day or over a period.

Time is life.

Time is money.

Time is a gift to us by the Creator that should be used to our best advantage.

How do you spend your time? That is literally a different way of saying "how do you spend your life"? This is because I believe the currency of life is time. Spend it on worthy pursuits.

Can you believe every one of us, whether rich or poor, learned or not, has equal 24 hours daily? This is equivalent to 86,400 seconds which has been aportioned to everyone to utilize or waste. When you have discovered your purpose for living, sometimes it feels like 24 hours is not enough for you. You feel like adding a couple of extra hours to your own day. I know so many people would very much love to do that if it were possible.

How do you effectively use your time?

Do you have an effective time management strategy?

Surround yourself with people who value time. Reconsider your friendship with people who do not respect your time. Time is the greatest gift you can give to someone, because it's like giving a portion of your life that you'll never get back. Time is one of the elements life is made up of, so value it.

Be prompt to all meetings and appointments. Integrity comes in both little and big things, time inclusive. There is nothing called "African Time". There is need for a paradigm shift in the way some people view time. For some Africans, they are notoriously known to add at least one hour to the time an event is to start. They believe that if an event is to start at 10:00 am they would not show up until 11:00 am. God knows why this has become a norm. It is so wrong. I do not believe in 'African time' because I have a lot of friends who are Africans who would never go late for any event be it party or a simple get together. They would always call ahead of time even if they would be like 5 minutes late. There is no European time or Japanese time or American time as an excuse for lateness. The concept of time is the same regardless of where you are from.

"The true currency of life is time, not money, and we've all got a limited stock of that".
